On the Interpretation of the Globular Cluster Luminosity Function

چکیده
The conversion of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF, dN/d logL) to the globular cluster mass function (GCMF, dN/d logM) is addressed. Dissolving globular clusters (GCs) become preferentially depleted in low-mass stars, which have a high mass-to-light ratio. This has been shown to result in a mass-to-light ratio (M/L) that increases with GC luminosity or mass, because more massive GCs have lost a smaller fraction of their stars than low-mass GCs. Using GC models, we study the influence of the luminosity dependency of M/L on the inferred GCMF. The observed GCLF is consistent with a powerlaw or Schechter type GC initial mass function in combination with a cluster mass-dependent mass loss rate. Below the peak, the logarithmic slope of the GCMF is shallower than that of the GCLF (0.7 versus 1.0), whereas the peak mass is 0.1—0.3 dex lower when accounting for the variability of M/L than in the case where a constant M/L is adopted. The Dependence of Globular Cluster Number on Density for Abell Cluster Central Galaxies
A study of the globular cluster systems of 23 brightest, or central, galaxies in 19 Abell clusters has recently been completed (Blakeslee 1997). This letter presents some of the newly discovered correlations of the globular cluster specific frequency SN in these galaxies with other galaxy and cluster properties and puts forth an interpretation of these results. SN is found to correlate strongly...
متن کاملThe initial distribution and evolution of globular cluster systems
This work considers the evolution of globular cluster systems in galaxies. Here globular cluster systems start with power-law mass functions φ ∼ M−α with slopes around 2.0, similar to what has been observed for the young luminous clusters seen in merging and interacting galaxies. We then follow the orbits of the clusters through their parent galaxy, allowing various destruction mechanisms to di...
متن کاملFSR 1735 – A new globular cluster candidate in the inner Galaxy
We carry out a large program to classify newly discovered star clusters from Froebrich et al. (2006) in the inner Galaxy. Here, we present a first analysis of a new high-priority globular cluster candidate, FSR 1735 at l=339.1879; b = −1.8534, based on new deep near infrared observations from Sofi at the NTT. A significant peak in the K-band luminosity function is found, which is interpreted as...

We present new BVI ground-based photometry and VI space-based photometry for the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341) and examine luminosity functions in B, V, and I containing over 50,000 stars ranging from the tip of the red giant branch to several magnitudes below the main sequence turn off. Once corrected for completeness, the observed luminosity functions agree very well with theoretical models...
متن کاملLuminosity Function of Faint Globular Clusters in M 87
We present the luminosity function to very faint magnitudes for the globular clusters in M87, based on a 30 orbit Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 imaging program. The very deep images and corresponding improved false source rejection allow us to probe the mass function further beyond the turnover than has been done before. We compare our luminosity function to those that have been observed i...
